Harris, Richard Tate

Richard Tate Harris, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the age of 66.Richard, better known as Tater Head, was born on September 27, 1948 in Lynchburg, Virginia, to his parents, Ruth and Calvin Harris. After graduating from Lynchburg College in 1974, his love for enriching his community and caring for others drove him to become involved with the Lynchburg Department of Social Services and then at the Virginia Department of Rehabilitation Services as a Rehabilitation Counselor assisting people in need. He later became the Executive Director of Big Brothers of Central Virginia and was adored by his entire community. After 5 years of helping develop that program, his dedication towards carpentry became his livelihood and led him to Charlottesville. Later in life he developed a passion for traveling and was lucky enough to visit Ireland. He was planning a trip to Germany this spring. He married Priscilla Harris in 1986 and created a beautiful family. Richard and Priscilla raised their kids (also known as his little Tater Tots) in Whitehall and Crozet, Virginia, where they created a very strong community of friends that loved him dearly. Above anything else in his life, Richard adored his three children. Their father was their shining example of what a kind and caring person should be. He was the kind of man that made you want to be just like him. Richard will be forever missed by his family, numerous friends, his community of carpenters, musicians, and those who benefited from his wonderful sense of humor that kept us all on the lighter side of life.Richard is survived by his wife, Priscilla, and his three Tater Heads, Steven, Melissa, and Brittany; one sister, Barbara H. Moore of SC; one brother, Tom Harris of NC; many cousins and nephews; and a special niece, Jackie. There will be a visitation at Anderson Funeral Home in Crozet on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 6 until 8 p.m. and a service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 beginning at 2 p.m. Location details will be announced tomorrow. All are welcome to celebrate with his family and friends. In lieu of flowers on Saturday, please bring a dish to enjoy.
