Mary Page Thurmond PettyjohnMary Page Thurmond Pettyjohn of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, November 5, 2014 after a long illness. She was born May 13, 1948 in Lynchburg, the daughter of Jane Ransone Thurmond and Philip Thomas Thurmond. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband, Clunet Holmes Pettyjohn Jr.A graduate of E.C. Glass High School and St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, North Carolina, Mary Page had a love for history, gardening, and most of all, for family. She was former President of the Board of Trustees at James River Day School, former President of the Lynchburg Garden Club and past Chairman of the Lynchburg Garden Club Foundation, Board member of Kids Haven, and an active member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Lynchburg Committee. She was also a business partner in Images, a successful flower arranging company.Mary Page is survived by her children, Clunet Holmes Pettyjohn III and his wife, Brooke, William Walker Pettyjohn and his wife, Shannon, all of Lynchburg, Elizabeth Page Pettyjohn Birney and her husband, John, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Shawn Bernard McGrath and his wife, Laurie, and Kevin Donald McGrath and his wife, Domenica, all of Crownsville, Maryland. She is also survived by her brother, Philip Thomas Thurmond Jr. and his wife, Mary Sue; and her sister, Elizabeth Stevens Thurmond Cable and her husband, Andy, all of Richmond, Virginia. In addition, 10 grandchildren, McKenna Page Pettyjohn, Clunet Holmes Pettyjohn IV, Mary Macon Pettyjohn, Piper Raine Pettyjohn, John Worrall Birney III (Jack), Carter Pettyjohn Birney, Connor Peter McGrath, Devin Wilcox McGrath, Kevin Donald McGrath Jr, and Morgan Domenica McGrath; her sister-in-law, Bowling Pettyjohn Mauzy and her husband, Courtney, of Little Switzerland, North Carolina; her brother-in-law, Claude Gilbert Pettyjohn and his wife, Winnie, of Earlysville, Virginia; and 11 nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2014 at her home, 1910 Parkland Drive, Lynchburg.A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, with Dr. Jim Price and the Rev. C. Jason Lewis officiating.
